Literature Text

So I didn’t want to give away what the reader was, right off the bat, but now it will be in the title, Yay!

---

Winter came sooner than you thought it would, and your husband’s preparations were slightly behind. His beautiful garden was withering away, and some of the ripened fruit and vegetables were rotting because of the frost. No matter. Both of you would pull through, you always had. A smile found its way to your lips as you shimmied out of your clothes, slowly you crept downstairs, and your husband wasn’t home.

Tonight he would be going to the local town in search of some vegetables, to replace the ones that rotted away. You contemplated for a few moments before opening the door, cold gusts of wind rolled around your body. And when you drew in a shuddery breath the exhale released white puffs of vapour that billowed across your round cheeks. Your eyes slowly drank in the horizon; (e/c) hues seemed lighter because of the snow, and the sun.

Taking a few weary steps outside, your feet stung because of the cold. Your body convulsed slightly as your hands took on a different form, your bones rearranging painlessly inside of your body because of consecutive transformation, and your back became more hunched, having the shoulder blades of a land mammal. Huge paws replaced your hands and feet, and on them there were claws the size of a woman’s forearm that replaced your once delicate fingernails. Your muzzle, rather your head was roughly thrice the size that of a wolf, your long sharp teeth were hidden inside of your mouth, surely they would strike fear in even the most formidable foes.

After leaning back and releasing a blood curdling howl, you were off, sprinting wildly into the forest you’ve come to know very well, you dashed through the newly fallen snow, avoiding the branches that would have probably nicked your face. You were slightly worried for your husband; he had already left in the morning to gather some of the vegetables and other necessities. Your large body halted for one moment before sniffing the air,

‘There’s going to be a blizzard’ you lightly growled to yourself, (e/c) eyes wandering in the direction where your husband wandered off to,

‘Please be safe’.

“C’mon Nor, don’t be that way, I’m sure we’re close to finding it, I can smell it in the air!” A blonde man exclaimed, his hand wildly swung the axe in the air making ‘Nor’ flinch.

“Stop swinging that around, stupid Dane; you might chop someone’s hand off, if not your own...” Nor said, only subtle hints of annoyance were lased in his voice, as Nor’s purple eyes gazed into the other man’s bright blue ones.

“Oh! Stop worrying Lukas! I won’t hurt you or myself. All I’m interested in hurting are those damn does, they’re so elusive! We haven’t seen some in weeks” The larger blonde muttered, trailing off the last part as he eyed the horizon before him.

“Mathias, I have a bad feeling about being out in the open, maybe we should have considered the dangers of hunting so deep in the forests at this time. What if something is hunting the deer?” Lukas’ voice was hushed and he glanced around, suddenly weary.

A shrill cry sounded through the forest, near the edge of the woods, roughly 50 feet from the two men. Their eyes widened as they saw bucks and does of all sizes suddenly charged into the clearing. In a matter of seconds Lukas reached for his bow and pulled two arrows from his quiver, he aligned the string to his eyes and drew the arrow; it drove right through the heart of a large buck. And as it tumbled to the ground it slowed some of the others behind it, there was his chance. He drew another arrow and released it, this time it dove into the skull, killing it instantly.

Meanwhile, Mathias went on a wild goose chase, he managed to swing his axe into the hip of the deer. It cried out and fell onto its side, struggling to stand once again. Mathias jogged up to the animal, and rubbed his cheek before pulling the axe out; he quickly drove the axe into the neck of the animal, not wanting it to suffer any more than it needed to.

Panting Mathias placed his hands on his knees, “Wow these deer are fast...” His statement was unheard, and so he turned to glance at his companion who was eyeing the edge of the forest with suspicion.

“It was so sudden... It’s strange...” Lukas mumbled, Mathias rolled his eyes playfully before grinning broadly.

“Who cares? We caught two bucks and one doe; we’ll be eating fine tonight! And maybe we won’t get mercury poisoning after all, hahaha!” Mathias loudly exclaimed, Norway snorted at the last part: with such harsh winters they’d been forced to fish for food, and Mathias was constantly reminding them about how they needed ‘variety’ in their diets. Feeding six mouths was a lot, and right now Lukas was grateful for even seeing these deer.

“Well I suppose you’re right, Mathias...” Lukas grumbled, not liking the idea of complimenting his ‘friend’.

The two men made quick action of dragging the deer back to their hunting cottage with the rope they brought along with them. Unknown to them, concealed just beneath the freshly fallen snow (e/c) wolf like eyes were curiously staring, waiting right at the edge of the clearing, by the dark forest.
